Decision guide · which is cheaper?

Dumpster rental vs junk removal — which one actually saves you money?

Both clear a cluttered garage. The pricing model is completely different. Here's when each option wins, with real Canadian numbers.

Dumpster rental
Cost: $349–$549 flat for 7 days, you load on your schedule
Best for: renovations, multi-day projects, anything >500 lbs
Friction: permit if on street, you do the lifting
Full-service junk removal
Cost: $250–$1,200+, priced by truck-volume
Best for: single-event cleanout, no manual labour, want it gone today
Friction: per-item pricing surprises, 2-hour window of inconvenience

Rule of thumb

  • Garage cleanout in one weekend? Junk removal wins — no permit, no rental period.
  • Kitchen reno over 4 days? Dumpster rental wins — load on your schedule.
  • Old appliances + furniture in one pile? Junk removal, they do the lifting.
  • Roofing tear-off, drywall, concrete? Dumpster — junk removal often refuses heavy debris.

What junk removal looks like (and why it costs more).

Junk removal is labour-included haulaway — a crew of 2-3 arrives at the agreed time, walks through your house or yard, lifts and carries everything onto their truck, sorts donations from landfill on the back end. Typical pricing: $350-$650 for a half-truck, $650-$1,200 for a full truck (~12 cubic yards), and time-on-site averages 60-90 minutes. The premium is the labour: their crew does the work you would have done over a weekend, and they own the disposal logistics.

Where dumpster rental is the better answer.

If you have more than 8-10 cubic yards of debris, or if the job is happening over multiple days (basement reno, garage demo, multi-room cleanout), or if the debris is mostly renovation-grade material (drywall, lumber, flooring, fixtures) — rent a dumpster. A 14-yard dumpster at $429 holds the equivalent of 1.5 full junk-removal trucks for less than half the price. You do the loading, we do the haulaway. Most home renovators save $400-$800 per project by doing this lane themselves.

Junk removal still wins for some jobs.

Three scenarios where the labour premium is worth it: (1) estate cleanouts with mixed donations + landfill — the crew sorts the Goodwill pile from the trash pile so you don't have to. (2) Single appliances or single rooms where you don't have the volume to justify a dumpster's footprint. (3) Stair access or attics where moving debris to a driveway dumpster is the real labour cost. For everything else — multi-day, multi-yard, construction-adjacent — the rental math wins. We run both lanes; the call we recommend depends on your debris profile, not our preference.
